He spent more than 20 years in the US Air Force, with 16 years in a team of Combat Rescue officers. He and his colleagues are a rare breed. Brave beyond comparison. Willing to go into a combat zone to rescue and return to safety those soldiers that have been injured. For over 100 years highly trained officers in the US military have entered the field of battle with the sole purpose of removing from harm’s way those that have been wounded in battle. In his 16 years, he was personally involved in nearly 500 rescue missions, each of them memorable.
These memories led him and others of his fellow officers to write down some of their thoughts in prose and poetry. He, and his team mates are collecting these writings into a volume of memories, that all may know of the wonderful work that these men do, and to reflect the gratitude of the men and women that they rescued. They risk their lives, that others may live.
In this painting, the artist has depicted two hands. One hand, reaching up, searching for assistance and rescue, desperate for life. A second hand reaching out in strength and confidence, desperate to bring their fellow service member back from the brink of death.
