Redwoods Meditation

In October of 2021 I visited Muir Woods on a clear, autumn morning. Wandering around the redwood forest, I looked up to the tops of these stately trees and found I was surrounded by trees on every side. You can almost lose yourself in the majesty of this forest.

This ink drawing takes you to the forest floor, as if you are laying on your back, reaching with your eyes for the tops of the trees, seeing the sky peek at you between the many branches. Listening for the call of the many birds flying among the trees, and the peaceful breeze blowing across the branches and the redwood needles.

As I was finishing up this drawing, I sat and looked at it, trying to decide if I was done. I felt like I was being absorbed into the drawing. I became one with it. I was once again laying down on the forest floor, looking up and feeling the peace that my mind craved. It gave me strength… and I knew then, that this drawing was complete.
